UPDATE,
September 2005:
SLOPE
SISTAIR, September 2-5 2005
FirstOnly”
slope style comption when own last weekend up at Hemlock Resort. Thirteen
out of 18 invited riders came form all over North America to celebrate
and throw down.
From the moment that I had arrived, I could tell it was going to be
fun. Car gaps, wall rides, snow cat gaps, step-downs over flower gardens.
All I can really say, is there was lots of speed and lots of air going
down.
Marcy
Shatula took the crowd by surprise, as not many people had even heard
of her. With her confidence and fineness, Marcy had a run that made
the crowd roar. With a no-footer off the car gap, to a huge one hander
cross up over the dirt jump, then pinned it into the huge 20ft log
gap which leads into a 30ft gap 15 ft step down, into the wall ride
high and then pinning it again into the last gap over the snow cat
with style. Only 4 girls from the whole weekend took big line over
the log gap, but Marcy did it with style and took first place for
the 2005 Slope Sistair Competition.
It took me a long time to commit to this event, as I had spent my
whole season focusing on other people improving their skills on a
mountain bike while starting my new business. I was finally able to
let go of the fear
of not doing well and focused on my other objective of helping increase
the exposure of women mountain biking. So basically, I went to help
increase the numbers with no intention of even qualifying. Nonetheless,
I had a very rewarding finish, making to the finals and leading the
girls with the first run down the mountain in the pouring rain to
take 5th place.
My adrenalin and excitement is still flowing through my system, as
I look back at all the girls I met and what we collectively accomplished.
Based on my conversations with most of the girls, I think I can easily
say that when we all showed up, we all had fear and question about
what was about to take place. When we left, we all had big smiles
on our faces and had done something bigger than we had ever done before.
DOCUMENTARY during Spokeswomen Camp, August 13-14 2005
Mountain biking for a lot of women has taken on a new meaning. For
many, it isn’t just about the exercise or getting outdoors,
it has evolved into more of a liberation and actualization of self.
I have been teaching mountain biking to women specifically for 5 years.
During that time, I have experienced women who amaze themselves over
and over by being able to do things that most people wouldn’t
even think of doing. Riding a section of a trail that looks so intimidating
and scary and applying easy steps to make it 1,2,3 easy. The numbers
of liberating moments are now uncountable.
Spokeswomen, a women’s mountain bike company run out of the
Whistler mountain bike resort, helped change a women’s life
forever. Coming to a camp after just surviving cancer, this women
needed to tell her story through a documentary of how this camp and
mountain biking pushed her through and helped her deal with a most
grave experience.
The gist of the documentary is to express the feelings of empowerment,
confidence, intuition and strength that women are getting through
the sport of mountain biking. Pushing your limits, understanding your
fears, learning the skills and constantly achieving success and rewards,
while building solid relationships and playing in the gardens of Mother
Nature.
REDBULL Camp Kick Off, Idaho,
August 9-11 2005
This year, Mad March Racing (Shaums March) and Redbull have joined
forces and will be providing mountain bike camps throughout the Western
States.
On August 9th, pro riders Shaums March, Aleisha Cline, Mike Jones
and myself headed out to the Redbull Student Brand Managers Season
kick off where we were just one of the activities for the weekend.
From paint ball to mountain biking, we were all apart of the festivities.
People who had never been on a mountain bikes before weren’t
so sure they should be on one now, but after a quick 2hr lesson and
one run down the mountain, the smiles, minds were changed. “
I never thought that mountain biking could be so much fun. I actually
wasn’t going to even come, but wow… addictive!!!”
