Rider Ability & Program Difficulty Levels

Adult Programs

Level 1 (L1):

This is where it all starts. For riders who have very little or no riding experience and who want to learn to ride more confidently. These sessions focus on the fundamental elements of all the skills to help you ride with more confidence, more success and better technique. These are the essential skills to take to the trails and riders are introduced to the trails gradually. Most of these sessions are held in a ‘controlled environment’ but finish ‘on trail’.

Level 2 (L2):

Ready to learn more bike handling skills to ride more confidently? This level is great for riders who are ready to get more out of their riding, break some bad habits and see the more challenging trails on the North Shore.

Ideal for graduates of our Level 1 course or have taken a camp or lesson somewhere before. This level is also good for people wanting to develop a more complete skill-set to ride the North Shore. These sessions are usually split between ‘on-trail’ and a ‘controlled environment’ such as bike park.

Level 3 (L3):

This level is about taking your riding to the next level with a more advanced skill set. Be ready to be challenged by skill progressions, bike handling skills and new trails throughout the program. All of the programs are run in a safe manner but these sessions are ideal for graduates of our Level 2 courses

If you can ride most of the North Shore trails but still lack confidence and sound technique, then this is the level for you. These programs are designed to give you the added insight to take your riding to the next level.

Advanced application of skills, faster paced rides, faster paced teaching and progressions as well as more ‘trail time’. Are you ready for the next step?

Level 4 (L4):

For confident riders who’ve excelled at previous levels, looking to take their riding to the next level. Wanting to improve on steeper terrain, faster descents, more technical features and learn new techniques from the pro’s. Ideal for graduates of our Level 3 courses. You’re comfortable with steep terrain, roots and rocks and stunts and want help to clean some really challenging sections. Riders will be challenged with more challenging terrain, new trails, new skills and a faster pace.

Riders in a Level 4 group are expected to have well-tuned full size mountain bikes, necessary equipment and fitness to ride for at least 2 hours at a time at a very fast pace, often on new terrain.

Youth Programs

Level INTRO:

This is where it all begins. Intro is for riders who have little to no trail riding experience and want to take their riding to the trails. Riders learn essential skills that will help them transition from pavement and gravel to riding on some of North Vancouver’s beginner mountain bike trails. Basic bike handling skills and fundamentals are taught to ensure a safe trail experience for these new mountain bikers.

These programs are suitable for riders of 6-9 years of age and typically have kids bikes with smaller wheels, hand brakes and gears.

**A minimum of a 20″ wheeled bike is required.**

Level 1 (L1):

Level 1 is for riders who have some trail riding experience amd are looking for more! RIders of these programs are excited to learn to ride more confidently with more skill and lots of new trails. Riders who want to gradually get introduced to more challenging terrain will find this level to be a perfect fit.

Most riders in the Level 1 program have junior sized bikes (24″ wheel), hand brakes and the appropriate gear to go into the trails for up to 2 hours at a time.

Level 2 (L2):

Riders in this level have some experience riding basic off road trails but roots, drops and steeper terrain can still be pretty challenging. You’re ready to learn some more advanced bike handling skills to ride more confidently. This level is great for riders who are ready to progress to new levels and discover new trails on the North Shore. Riders in this program are typically comfiortable with the terrain but still growing as a rider and might not be ready to go full speed yet.

Riders in these programs typically ride full size mountain bikes (26″ wheel) and have the necessary equipment and fitness to ride on the trails for 2 hours at a time.

Level 3 (L3):

Level 3 is for the rider who is comfortable with most of the trails on the North Shore and ready to find more! Riders in this level shouldn’t have too many problems with steep terrain, roots, rocks, and stunts, but are looking to fine tune the skills necessary to ride smoothly and with a flow. You will be introduced to harder trails with more challenging terrain and a faster pace.

Riders in these programs ride full size mountain bikes (26″ wheel) and have the necessary equipment and fitness to ride on the trails for at least 2 hours at a time at a faster pace.

Level 4 (L4):

For confident riders who’ve excelled at previous levels, looking to take their riding to the next level. Wanting to improve on steeper terrain, faster descents, more technical features and learn new techniques from the pro’s.
